How Prebid Is Evolving for the Agentic Advertising Era

TL;DR: Prebid is the open-source header bidding framework used by thousands of US publishers. As agentic advertising grows, the Prebid community is addressing how open-source infrastructure can support agent-to-agent deal negotiation alongside its existing auction-based model.

What Prebid Is

Prebid.org is a non-profit organisation that maintains open-source header bidding software for publishers and app developers. Prebid.js, its primary product, allows publishers to run simultaneous auctions across multiple demand sources before passing the winning bid to their ad server. The result is more competitive yield for publishers compared to the traditional waterfall model.

Prebid is widely adopted across US premium publishing. For buyers, it is relevant because header bidding via Prebid increases transparency into the auction process and reduces the information asymmetry that characterised earlier programmatic buying.

Why Agentic Advertising Is Relevant to Prebid

Prebid's architecture is built around the OpenRTB auction model. A bid request goes out, multiple buyers respond with prices, the highest price wins. What it does not natively support is the kind of negotiated, bilateral deal-making that characterises agentic advertising.

As autonomous buy-side agents emerge, the question for the Prebid community is how open-source publisher infrastructure can support direct agent-to-agent negotiation alongside, or in addition to, the existing auction model. Several Prebid working groups are evaluating this, including how agent communication protocols such as AdCP could interact with Prebid's existing module architecture.

For US publishers running Prebid, the implication is that their header bidding infrastructure may need to evolve to support two distinct transaction types: conventional auction-based programmatic and negotiated agentic deals.

What This Means for US Publishers

Publishers using Prebid have two practical considerations.

First, Prebid's open-source governance model means that any evolution toward agentic support will be community-driven and transparent. Publishers who are active in the Prebid community can influence how that evolution happens and ensure their infrastructure requirements are represented.

Second, in the near term, agentic marketplace deals are likely to sit alongside, not inside, Prebid. A publisher's agentic marketplace relationship operates at the negotiated deal layer. Prebid continues to manage the open-market and PMP auction layer. The two can coexist without requiring changes to the publisher's current Prebid setup, as long as the ad server is configured to prioritise agentic deal line items appropriately.

What This Means for US Buyers

For US buyers, Prebid's role in agentic advertising is a publisher infrastructure question rather than a buy-side decision. What matters to buyers is whether the publishers they are targeting through agentic marketplaces can accept and serve against agentic deal records, which is an ad server and deal management question that publishers with Prebid-based stacks need to resolve.

Buyers evaluating agentic platforms should ask what the integration path looks like for publishers using Prebid-based infrastructure, and whether the agentic marketplace has worked through those integration requirements with its publisher supply network.

Alkimi's Position

Alkimi is building to support publisher supply across different infrastructure configurations. The DealSheet deal record is designed to be compatible with publishers' existing ad server and deal management workflows, including those built on Prebid-based infrastructure. The agentic deal layer sits above the auction layer, not in place of it, which means publishers can adopt Alkimi's infrastructure without replacing their existing Prebid setup.
