Can AI Agents Buy In-Game Advertising?

Yes, AI agents can buy some in-game advertising today, but only where a game publisher sells its inventory through programmatic deals or agent-readable protocols that a buying agent can reach. Rewarded video and standard in-game placements sold through ad servers, supply-side platforms and deal IDs are within reach. Console titles sold through bespoke direct deals, and custom brand integrations, still run through people.

TL;DR: The question is less about the agent and more about the supply path. Roblox, Zynga and specialist intrinsic platforms have made in-game inventory buyable through the programmatic routes agents already use, while at least one major console publisher is selling direct first. The open standards now name gaming as a channel, and measurement guidelines for intrinsic in-game ads exist. The harder problems are brand suitability inside live gameplay and making sure the terms an agent accepts are the terms the buyer meant.

What counts as in-game advertising for an AI buying agent?

In-game advertising, for an agent, is whatever the protocol and the seller describe as gaming inventory. The Ad Context Protocol's v3 channel list includes a gaming channel defined as "In-game advertising across platforms (intrinsic in-game, rewarded video, playable ads)". The same AdCP documentation notes that rewarded video in gaming apps could also be classed as online video, and tells implementers to use gaming when the money comes from a gaming budget and online video when it comes from a video budget.

That classification matters. An agent spending a video budget may treat rewarded video in a game as ordinary online video, so the mandate has to say which bucket it belongs to.

Intrinsic in-game ads are a separate category again. The Intrinsic In-Game Measurement Guidelines 2.0, released on 31 August 2022 by IAB, IAB Tech Lab and the Media Rating Council, describe intrinsic ads as native ads placed inside the game environment. The guidelines cover viewability, measurement, inactivity and fraud for those placements.

How does in-game inventory reach an AI agent today?

In-game inventory reaches an agent through the same deal paths that already carry display and video. When a game publisher packages placements as programmatic guaranteed or private marketplace deals, a buying agent working through a demand-side platform can activate them by deal ID, as explained in how agent-negotiated deals reach a DSP.

Roblox is the clearest public example. In April 2025 Roblox announced that Rewarded Video ads would be available to buy programmatically through Google's advertising solutions and through direct insertion orders, with Billboards to follow into Google Ad Manager and more demand sources connected through Google's Authorized Buyers. AdExchanger reported that buyers would be able to purchase the format through programmatic guaranteed and private marketplace deals.

Mobile gaming has moved in the same direction. MediaPost reported in July 2026 that, through a partnership between PubMatic and Zynga, advertisers can use PubMatic's AgenticOS and Activate platform to experiment with AI-powered programmatic buying workflows when targeting Zynga's gaming audience. Specialist intrinsic platforms work through familiar formats too: Anzu's own site describes a "programmatic-ready setup that fits into existing workflows, using standard IAB sizes on a single IO".

As a concrete worked example, Alkimi runs a Gym where buyers and sellers build their own agents, set the rules they work to and spar against counterparty agents before any real money moves. A game publisher could use a sparring round to see whether a buyer agent asks about opt-in, frequency and verification before it commits to a rewarded video package.

What can AI agents buy in games today?

The answer depends on how each publisher sells, so the table sorts in-game inventory by route rather than format.

The console row reflects a publisher's choice. Digiday reported in June 2026 that Electronic Arts had built an ad server and SDK into its Frostbite engine, with impression measurement aligned to IAB standards and verification through Integral Ad Science, and was going direct first with no DSP access, no open auction and no automated buying.

Which standards cover in-game ads bought by agents?

Three kinds of standard apply: agent protocols, measurement guidelines and planning frameworks. Leading the agent protocols is IAB Tech Lab's Agentic Advertising Management Protocols (AAMP), summarised in what the AAMP standard is. The Ad Context Protocol, published by AgenticAdvertising.org, describes itself as the open protocol that lets AI agents discover, plan, buy, sell and measure media across every channel, and its channel taxonomy names gaming explicitly.

For measurement, the Intrinsic In-Game Measurement Guidelines 2.0 give agents and verification partners a shared definition of a viewable in-game impression. For planning, AdExchanger reported in September 2026 that the IAB has updated its gaming measurement guidelines, rolled out standardised ad units and is working on a Gaming Buyer Map, which IAB's Cintia Gabilan described as "a practical planning framework".

Standardised units are what make agent buying practical at scale. Electronic Arts' Alex Dao told Digiday in July 2026: "We do see an opportunity in the future on how we actually start to standardize more formats that are designed for console games."

Why is in-game harder for an AI buyer than display?

In-game is harder because the content around the ad is live and unscripted. Digiday's June 2026 report put it plainly: unlike a pre-roll or a display placement, a brand has no control over what is happening in the frame around its ad, and in-game brand safety tooling is less mature than on the open web. The checks a buyer expects an agent to run are covered in how to maintain brand safety when AI agents buy media.

The channel's history also argues for patience. "In-game advertising has been framed as the next big thing for a long time, but development was slow while programmatic and automation could not be reconciled with the need to maintain the integrity of the game experience," Claire Holubowskyj, senior research analyst at Enders Analysis, told Digiday.

Contract terms are the third risk. In Concourse Bench v1, 95 of 110 contracts signed by AI buying agents promised a viewability floor below 70%. In-game viewability has its own guidelines, so an agent that does not know which definition applies is more likely to accept a weak floor without noticing.

What should a buyer agree before an agent buys in-game media?

A buyer should agree the in-game terms in writing before the agent starts, because games vary more from title to title than websites do. A short mandate checklist:

  • Which budget in-game rewarded video sits in: gaming or online video.

  • Which viewability definition applies, and which verification partner measures it.

  • Brand suitability categories for game genres, age ratings and live or player-generated content.

  • Whether rewarded formats must be opt-in, and what frequency cap applies per player.

  • Which deal types the agent may use, and which titles or publishers are excluded.

  • The spend level above which a person must approve the deal.

The approval point fits a staged model of earned autonomy: Observe, Recommend, Draft, Human-approved action, then Bounded automatic action. For a new channel such as in-game, most buyers will want agents at the Draft or Human-approved stage until the record shows they read game inventory correctly, the same caution covered in whether AI agents can buy linear TV.

What does an accountable in-game agent buy look like?

An accountable in-game buy is one where both sides can show what was agreed, not only what was delivered. That means the agent's identity is checked, a person keeps approval rights over the deal, and the terms, including the viewability definition, suitability rules and format, are written down at the moment of agreement.

Alkimi's Marketplace is built around that sequence. It is neutral, works within IAB Tech Lab's AAMP framework today and is being built to be AdCP compatible, uses AAMP identity checks and leaves humans with approval rights at the deal level. Its DealSheet is written at agreement, timestamped, held by both parties and retrievable by either side independently, so a game publisher and a buyer are not reconciling two versions of the same in-game deal.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI agents buy ads inside Roblox?

Roblox announced in April 2025 that Rewarded Video would be buyable programmatically through Google's advertising solutions and through direct insertion orders, including programmatic guaranteed and private marketplace deals. A buying agent working through a DSP with access to those deals can activate them by deal ID.

Can an AI agent buy console game ads?

Some console inventory is still sold direct by the publisher's own team. Digiday reported in June 2026 that Electronic Arts launched its ad platform without DSP access or automated buying, so an agent cannot buy that inventory programmatically yet.

Is in-game rewarded video a gaming buy or a video buy for an agent?

AdCP lets it be classed either way and recommends gaming when the money comes from a gaming budget. The buyer's mandate should say which budget it draws on, so the agent does not double count it or miss it.

Which measurement standard applies to intrinsic in-game ads?

The Intrinsic In-Game Measurement Guidelines 2.0, released in August 2022 by IAB, IAB Tech Lab and the Media Rating Council, cover viewability, measurement, inactivity and fraud. Buyers should name these guidelines in the deal terms an agent negotiates.

Do in-game ads bought by an agent need human approval?

For a channel where formats and brand suitability vary by title, human approval at the deal level is the sensible default. Autonomy can widen in stages once the record shows the agent reads game inventory correctly.
